Yohimbe
Bark Extract
(the most popular
aphrodisiac in the world)
Yohimbe
Bark Extract works by expanding the blood vessels in the
genital area. For men, it increases the formation of Nitrous
Oxide, a natural substance that is important for producing
an erection. Physiologically, Yohimbe is shown to increase
fulfillment and sensation. Yohimbe is a common natural
Viagra ingredient found in many herbal impotency treatments
and has been used for centuries to treat sexual dysfunction
and enhance virility. Yohimbe works to increase blood
flow to the genitals in both men and women and increases
the nerve impulses to the pelvic area. Yohimbe has a general
stimulating effect on the nervous system to open blood vessels,
increase sensitivity and heighten libido. This effect
from Yohimbe is essential for increased circulation to the
genital area where sensitivity and blood flow is enhanced.
Yohimbe bark has also been shown to be effective in treating
impotence in men and women caused by psychological reasons,
such as stress, tension or fatigue. Yohimbe can regain
lost sexual function. Yohimbe improves sexual function
without side effects and has been effective in treating
impotency in patients with kidney disease and diabetes.
Yohimbe provides a boost to the body's ability to perform
sexually and stimulates sexual potency by reducing the
effects of hormones in the body that cause constriction
of blood vessels. Yohimbe has been used for thousands
of years to treat lacking sex drive and performance.
The active component of yohimbe bark is yohimbine, an
alkaloid monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor that blocks adrenergic
receptors. This leads to an increase in dilation of
blood vessels and a lowering of blood pressure. This enlargement
of blood vessels, particularly in the sexual organs, is
the generally accepted explanation of the physiological
effects of the herb. Yohimbe also seems effective in
elevating mood and reducing depression and anxiety, further
contributing to its aphrodisiac activity. It has been
widely used in Europe for about 75 years to treat male erectile
dysfunction, formerly called impotence. The
U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved yohimbe
as a treatment for impotence in the late 1980s.
It also prevents blood from flowing out of the penis during
an erection. It may also act on the central nervous
system, specifically the lower spinal cord area where sexual
signals are transmitted. Studies show it is effective in
30-40% of men with impotence. It is primarily effective
in men with impotence caused by vascular, psychogenic, or
diabetic problems. In men without erectile dysfunction,
yohimbe in some cases appears to increase sexual stamina
and prolong erections. Thousands of Urologists in the U.S.
and abroad have been recommending the drug forms of Yohimbe
for years. Many studies have shown that Yohimbe can help
impotence caused by poor circulation, (i.e. age, diabetes,
emotional problems, etc.) A recent clinical study
in Rhode Island (published in the Journal of Urology) tested
the active ingredient in yohimbe on a group of men who had
experienced chronic sexual dysfunction. For those who had
been impotent for less than two years the improvement
rate was an astounding 81% as a direct result of consuming
a moderate dosage over a period of one month. The Rhode
Island study also showed that two thirds of the men who
had reported having only a partial erection or erections
of a short duration, and had failed in normal intercourse
at least 50% of the time, reported fuller and longer lasting
erections, leading to consistently successful lovemaking.
The effects of Yohimbe start around 30 minutes after ingestion
and last around two hours; however, the full beneficial
effect begins after 2 to 4 weeks of continuous daily use.
Yohimbe expands the blood vessels in the extremities of
the body including the genitals (similar to the prescription
drug Viagra), skin and even fat cells. Yohimbe acts as
an alpha adrenoreceptor blocker reducing the effect of hormones
that cause constriction of blood vessels, which typically
increases as we age. Yohimbe particularly aids blood
flow to the corpus cavernosom to more readily engorge the
penis. Yohimbe concurrently increases the body's
production of norepinephrine which is essential to the formation
of erections and steps up adrenaline to nerve endings which
enhance sexual stimulation.
Niacin
Niacin (vitamin B3) is an essential vitamin found in many
foods. The human body uses niacin in more than 50 chemical
reactions. Niacin works in the body to dilate capillaries
causing in increase of blood flow to the peripheries.1,2
A common form of niacin, called niacinamide, is found in
most vitamin and mineral supplements, but does not have
the vasodilatory affects associated with niacin.
Tribulus
Terrestris
This
herb, commonly known as puncture vine, has long been used
among Ayurvedic practitioners for the treatment of genito-urinary
tract disorders and liver tonic. Tribulus Terrestis has
however in recent times shown its effectiveness in improving
sexual function. Studies in the 1980's showed further
convincing evidence of its action on sexual function. Tribulus
Terrestis also contains powerful steroid saponins (furostanol
type) which have been used traditionally to improve the
libido. Studies performed in Europe concluded that
supplementation with tribulus could increase testosterone
levels by 30% or more in just five days.
Tribulus terrestris is a perennial plant, which grows predominately
in India and Africa. Tribulus is mentioned in ancient Indian
Ayurvedic medical texts dating back thousands of years.
Tribulus has been used widely in the Ayurvedic system of
medicine for the treatment of sexual dysfunction and various
urinary disorders.
In one study, Tribulus terrestris increased spermatogenesis
and sexual activity in laboratory animals. Tribulus terrestris
appears to raise/turn on natural testosterone production
in men via the activation of hormone secretion and estradiol.
Clinical studies in Bulgaria have shown Tribulus terrestris
to increase the sex hormones LH (luteinizing hormone) level
by 72% and the body's own free testosterone level by 41%
in healthy adult males in only five days. LH regulates
the testosterone production in the testes and high levels
of LH coincide with high testosterone levels. Tribulus has
become increasingly popular with athletes because it reportedly
increases strength and stamina. Studies into Tribulus' uses
are ongoing. It is a botanical that has been used for hundreds
of years in Europe for hormone insufficiency in men and
women. It is widely believed that Tribulus is the closest
and strongest natural herbal alternative to synthetic hormones.
Although Tribulus grows in many parts of the world including
India, China and Bulgaria, all Tribulus is not created equal.
Studies that were conducted at the University of Mississippi
conclusively proved that Bulgarian Tribulus included significantly
more steroidal saponins than plants found in other areas
that the plant grows. In particular, the steroidal saponin
called Protodioscin, which is considered to be the most
important compound in the botanical, is found in measurable
levels only in Bulgaria. The aerial portion of the plant
including the fruit contains pharmacologically active metabolites
such as phytosteroids, flavonoids, alkaloids and glycosides.
However it is the Protodioscin as well as other steroidal
saponins that are believed to actually elevate the level
of several hormones in the human body. Clinical studies
in the past using Bulgarian Tribulus revealed that herbal
extracts of the material elevated levels of LH (Luteinizing
Hormone), FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) and Estradiol. As
the levels of these hormones is increased so too is Testosterone,
sperm production and libido and well as positive changes
in cholesterol, mood, and self-confidence. Individuals
reported subjective feedback of increased libido and overall
well-being on the product. Further, no adverse effects were
reported either through the blood tests or the individuals
related to liver functions or any other side effects.Tribulus
terrestris has been shown to exhibit sexual enhancement
properties similar to DHEA.21 One study of rabbits showed
that the active protodioscin exhibited erectile activity
Panax Ginseng Root
Panax
has traditionally been used internally for illnesses associated
with old age or lack of appetite, insomnia, stress, shock
and chronic illness. Ginseng contains phytochemicals
that may support endurance and stamina. Panax Ginseng Extract
also has a reputation as an aphrodisiac. Researchers
note the herb stimulates the central nervous system. . It
has been shown to promote spermatogenesis in men. A study
published in the journal British Pharmacology, May 1995,
concluded that substances in ginseng extract known as ginsenosides
work in a similar way as Viagra in enhancing the effects
of nitric oxide, which helps relax artery walls, allowing
more blood flow into the penis. Ginseng is the source of
a stimulant and supposed aphrodisiac, which is extracted
from the roots Panax, commonly referred to as ginseng, is
a genus of perennial herbs in the Araliaceae (ginseng family).
Three species in this genus include Panax quinquefolium,
Panax notaginseng, and Panax ginseng. Panax quinquefolium
(American or white ginseng) is commonly found in rich woods
from Maine to Georgia and from Oklahoma to Minnesota (Foster,
1990). Panax ginseng (Chinese or red ginseng) has been cultivated
for thousands of years throughout China, Korea, and Japan
(Anon., 1997). The botanical name Panax is derived from
the Greek word for panacea. Ginseng literally means "root
of man," because the root of this plant often resembles
the shape of a human body (Mindell 1992). The root of Panax
species is used medicinally. It takes four to five years
before the root has matured enough so that it becomes medically
active and worth harvesting. Cultivated varieties deteriorate
badly after growing about ten years, whereas the wild root
improves with age. Therefore, it is the wild root that is
preferred over the cultivated varieties (Anon., 1997).
Guarana
Seed Extract
Guarana
is a plant that contains a natural source of caffeine.20
Caffeine is a stimulant that temporarily increases alertness,
heart rate and blood flow. Fights fatigue and promotes mental
alertness. Guarana is a climbing shrub native to South America,
especially Brazil and Uruguay. Guarana has been used for
centuries by the Amazon Indians for it's spirited and refreshing
qualities. Today Brazilian miners drink Guarana beverage
because it provides a wonderfully natural energetic feeling.
Guarana is a potent South American energy food with numerous
health benefits. For thousands of years, native Amazonians
have used the seed of the guarana berry to help maintain
stamina and physical endurance
Ashwagandha
Root
(Red Ginseng)
The health applications for ashwagandha in traditional Indian
and Ayurvedic medicine are extensive. Of particular note
is its use against tumors, inflammation (including arthritis),
and a wide range of infectious diseases. The shoots and
seeds are also used as food and to thicken milk in India.
Traditional uses of ashwagandha among tribal peoples in
Africa include fevers and inflammatory conditions. Ashwagandha
is frequently a constituent of Ayurvedic formulas, including
a relatively common one known as shilajit.
Active constituents: The constituents believed to be active
in ashwagandha have been extensively studied. Compounds
known as withanolides are believed to account for the multiple
medicinal applications of ashwagandha. These molecules are
steroidal and bear a resemblance, both in their action and
appearance, to the active constituents of Asian ginseng
(Panax ginseng) known as ginsenosides. Indeed, ashwagandha
has been called "Indian ginseng" by some. Ashwagandha
and its withanolides have been extensively researched in
a variety of animal studies examining effects on immune
function, inflammation, and even cancer. Ashwagandha
stimulates the activation of immune system cells, such as
lymphocytes. It has also been shown to inhibit inflammation
and improve memory in animal experiments. Taken together,
these actions may support the traditional reputation of
ashwagandha as a tonic or adaptogen -an herb with multiple,
nonspecific actions that counteract the effects of stress
and generally promote wellness. Ashwagandha is the dried
root of a bush in the nightshade family called Withania
somnifera. Also known as winter cherry or "Indian
Ginseng," ashwagandha belongs to the pepper family.
has many qualities. It functions as an energy booster
and benefits those with slow circulation. Those who
complain of tiredness, lethargy and mental sluggishness
have seen positive results from Red Ginseng. It is also
known for it's immune boosting properties against infection
and disease. Red Ginseng promotes the secretion of sexual
hormones in men and women and promotes blood production,
hence penis enhancement. Chemical constituents known
as "ginsenosides" have been shown to actually
slow down the aging process. They do this by destroying
free radicals that attack normal cells. This aspect
to Red Ginseng was discovered by Dr John Walker, for which
he was awarded the Nobel Prize. Further research has shown
a mild decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure
for hypertensive patients who took Red Ginseng daily. Other
beneficial effects from Red Ginseng include; lowering the
risk of stroke; lowering blood sugar (protection against
diabetes); protection of the heart; lower bad cholesterol;
help mental fatigue; elevate sexual desire and responsiveness,
and penis enhancement.
L-Arginine
L-Arginine
is one of the twenty amino acids that are considered essential
for human life. Many studies have shown the body uses Arginine
as a precursor for nitric oxide, a neurotransmitter used
by the body for initiating and mediating penile erections.
L-arginine is also used by the body in conjunction with
ornithine, another amino acid, to produce many of the bodies'
hormones. The body also utilizes Arginine to produce sperm.
Arginine is an amino acid that helps form nitric oxide,
a chemical messenger involved in dilating blood vessels.
Damiana
Leaf Extract
Damiana has an ancient reputation as an aphrodisiac.
In traditional medicine it has been used for thousands of
years and is indicated for use as a preventative for
disease and sexual dysfunction. In the 1900s, a
doctor in the US who conducted research in his own practice
found Damiana to assist in cases of partial impotence and
sexual debility. And in Europe the herb is deemed not
only to enhance sexual ability, but to also have an excellent
effect on the reproductive organs. Experts believe it
aids sexual function by mildly irritating the urethra.
The urethra is the passageway for urine, and in men it also
acts as a genital duct that carries sperm to the exterior.
It is hypothesized that this slight irritation increases
the sensitivity of the penis. The leaves contain beta-sitosterol
and other aromatic oils. These constituents may be responsible
for the stimulant effect and the building of the sexual
and reproductive systems. It is also used for chronic
fatigue and mental and physical exhaustion. Damiana affects
primarily the urinary and reproductive systems. It has been
used as an aphrodisiac and to boost sexual potency in
men by the native peoples of Mexico, including the Mayan
Indians, for thousands of years. It is said to act as a
sexual stimulant and produce a feeling of general well being.
Damiana is sometimes used in men to treat spermatorrhea,
premature ejaculation, sexual sluggishness, and prostate
complaints. It is often used in combination with other
herbs to treat impotence. Damiana, of the Turneraceae plant
family, is an aromatic shrub with small yellow flowers that
grows on dry, sunny, rocky hillsides in south Texas, Southern
California, Mexico, and Central America. The two species
used in herbal healing, both of which are referred to as
damiana, are Turnera aphrodisiaca and Turnera diffusa. Damiana
usually grows to a height of about 24 in (60 cm). Its pale
green leaves, which turn yellow-brown when dried, are 0.5-1
in (15-25 mm) long and quite narrow. They have serrated
(jagged) edges. The leaves and sometimes the stems of the
plant have medicinal uses. Other names for damiana include
old woman's broom, Mexican damiana, pastorata, hierba del
venado, oreganello, and the bourrique. It had long enjoyed
a local reputation as a stimulant tonic of the sexual apparatus
among the natives of Mexico,
Gingko
Biloba Leaf Extract
Traceable
back 300 million years, the ginkgo is the oldest surviving
species of tree. Although it died out in Europe during the
Ice Age, ginkgo survived in China, Japan, and other parts
of East Asia. It has been cultivated extensively for both
ceremonial and medical purposes, and some particularly revered
trees have been lovingly tended for over 1,000 years. Presently,
ginkgo is the most widely prescribed herb in Germany, reaching
a total prescription count of over 6 million in 1995. Numerous
studies have found that ginkgo extracts can improve circulation.
The herb appears to make the blood more fluid, reduce the
tendency toward blood clots, extend the life of a natural
blood vessel-relaxing substance, and act as an antioxidant.
Recent reports suggest that ginkgo may also be useful in
reversing the impotence caused by drugs in the Prozac
family as well as other types of antidepressant medications.
Ginkgo is a popular herb that has been used traditionally
for thousands of years, and recently for its reported effects
for memory, brain and heart benefits. The actives in Ginkgo
work to dilate blood vessels giving more blood to the extremities.28,29
These actives also improve elasticity to blood vessels,
allowing more blood to flow through the body being a reliable
peripheral vasodilator, Ginkgo has been shown to be an
excellent agent for treating arterial erectile dysfunction.
It has a direct effect on endothelial cells which enhance
blood flow of both penile arteries for penis enhancement
and veins without any change in systemic blood pressure.
An abundance of research has been undertaken on this ancient
plant, revealing a wide range of profound and important
therapeutic effects. Gingko is believed to increase stamina
and longevity and has been called `The Fountain of Youth'.
Ginkgo not only helps brain circulation but also penile
blood flow. A study using a standardized extract showed
78% in regained erections which where known to be caused
by poor blood flow.
Saw Palmetto
Saw
Palmetto has a diverse use, toxifying the reproductive system,
moving phlegm out of the body, and adding strength or yang
energy. It is considered an aphrodisiac penis enhancement.
It treats wasting diseases (such as diabetes), impotence,
frigidity, dysmenorrhea, sexual neurasthenia, and prostate
problems. Saw Palmetto is used to treat benign prostatic
hyperplasia (BPH), an enlargement of the prostate gland
that affects about half of all men older than fifty. BPH
is a non-cancerous growth of the prostate gland. If the
prostate grows in mature men, it pinches the urethra, or
urine tube, and problems begin, including painful urination
and frequent nighttime trips to the bathroom. The average
male over age 50 may suffer from a variety of reproductive
ailments, such as prostate problems, low back pain, and
diminishing sexual vitality-this herb can help in alleviating
some, if not all, of these symptoms. It helps the body build
muscles, and is good for colds, asthma, bronchitis and catarrh
due to hypo-functioning and coldness in the body. Saw palmetto
is a small shrubby palm native to Florida and has a long
folk history as an aphrodisiac and sexual rejuvenator. The
berries were used by the American Indians as a general tonic
to nourish the body and encourage appetite and normal weight
gain. Recent studies have implicated saw palmetto as an
effective treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. Investigators
have found that the fat and sterol extracts (fatty acids:
capric, caprylic, caproic, lauric, palmitic, and oleic;
sterols: beta-sistosterol, stimasterol, cycloartenol, stimasterol,
luepol, lupenone and 24-methyl-cycloartenol) are the active
ingredients responsible for its therapeutic action. Both
appear to inhibit testosterone-5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme
that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Dihydrotestosterone is linked to increased cell proliferation
and subsequent enlargement of the prostate. In addition,
saw palmetto inhibits the binding of DHT to receptors thus
blocking its action and promoting the breakdown of this
component. Various human studies have illustrated saw palmetto's
efficacy in ameliorating prostate enlargement with the added
benefit of minor, if any, side effects
Muira
Puama Stem Extract
Muira
Puama is a safe and more effective alternative for penis
enhancement to Yohimbe extract or capsules. Recent clinical
research reported that Muira puama was more effective than
the prescription drug, yohimbine hydrochloride, for loss
of libido in 64% of 362 men studied without side effects
An aphrodisiac regularly used by sexually healthy men
and women for it's ability to enhance and prolong the
sexual experience Muira puama has been used traditionally
for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac. Many have
touted it for its uses in improving sexual arousal,
desire and helping with impotence. Current research shows
favorable results using Muira puama for various sexual problems
Muira puama, marapuama or liriosma is a bush occurring in
the northern and northeastern parts of Brazil. The white
flowers have a jasmine-like pungent and aromatic smell.
It is also known under the name potency wood or under its
latin name Ptychopetalum uncinatum (also known as P. olacoides)
The active constituents are contained in the bark from which
a concentrated water extract or a dilute herbal tea can
be prepared. The herbal tea is slightly bitter but can,
of course, be sweetened to make it more palatable. A daily
dose of muira puama would correspond to the order of magnitude
of one gramme of bark. It is alleged to be effective against
a multitude of symptoms. M. Penna in "Notes Sobre Plantas
Brasileires" (1930) includes treatment of disorders
of the nervous system, impotency, and gastrointestinal and
circulatory astenia. D. Schwontkowski in "Herbs of
the Amazon" (1993) mentiones not only impotence but
frigidity, menstrual cramps and premenstrual syndrome.
In a French study of 262 patients complaining of erectile
impotence or lack of libido, within two weeks of daily
treatment 62 % of patients with loss of libido claimed that
the treatment had effect. Of the patients with erection
failures 51 % felt that muira puama was beneficial.
No constituents, which could give rise to the reported alleged
effects have yet been isolated and identified. Muira Puama
is traditionally used as an aphrodisiac. South American
Indians sometimes drink a muira puama beverage before planned
lovemaking to enhance sexual desire. Muira puama is also
a traditional herb for nervous exhaustion and depression.
A paper presented at The First International Congress on
Ethnopharmacology held in Strasbourg, France, in 1990, described
a trial done at the Institute of Sexology in Paris on 262
men with erection problems and a lack of sexual desire.
Researchers found that over half of the subjects given a
daily dose of 1 to 1.5 g of muira puama extract over two
weeks experienced positive benefits to their sex lives.
Maca
Maca
Maca is a nut found in South America that has been
used for thousands of years for energy and as an
aphrodisiac. Recent research has found it to increase
sexual activity in rat subjects For centuries, the Maca
root has grown wild in the Peruvian Andes just below the
glacial icecap. The only area where this particular species
of maca is found is a region of extreme weather conditions
such as freezing, high winds, and intensive sunlight. No
other food plant exists in the world which will grow at
so high an altitude and survive. Native shepherds soon learned
that as they grazed their herds in higher elevations, where
Maca grows naturally, the herds became healthier, with more
stamina and became much more sexually active. Soon,
the Andean Herd People included Maca in their diets, and
found Maca could help promote increased energy and stamina
for themselves.
The rich soil located at these high plateaus of Peru where
it is very cold and oxygen poor may account for the high
levels of trace minerals found in maca root. Some Peruvian
Indians of today still grow it in the same traditional way
without pesticides or chemicals. The healing qualities of
maca have helped the local native population thrive in this
oxygen-poor plateau where they live. Maca root contains
significant amounts of amino acids, complex carbohydrates,
vitamins B1, B2, B12, C and E and minerals, including calcium,
phosphorus, zinc, magnesium and iron. This herb has been
traditionally used as an aphrodisiac for both men and women,
to increase energy, vitality, stamina and endurance in athletes,
promote mental clarity, for fertility and to increase male
seminal fluid volume, sperm count and sperm motility, for
treating male impotence and erectile dysfunction, and
for female menstrual irregularities and hormone imbalances,
including menopause and perimenopause. Women with menstrual
irregularities have experienced greater consistency, while
women with hot flashes, mood swings and most associated
perimenopause and menopause symptoms have diminished dramatically.
Due to the number of steroidal glycosides present in Maca
root it is gaining popularity among weight lifters and body
builders as a natural alternative to anabolic steroids. The
popularity of maca worldwide is growing at an enormous rate..
In August of 2001, results of the first major clinical trial
conducted on the effects of maca consumption were released.
The maca used in the study was a very concentrated, powerful
version created through a process called gelatinization.

Epimedium
Sagitatum (Horny Goat Weed)
Epimedium
Sagitatum otherwise known as Horny Goat Weed) penis enhancement
herb is a Chinese herb often referred to as a "Yang
tonic". This herb produces a warm, almost euphoric
effect on the body. Epimedium is commonly used as
an aphrodisiac penis enhancement and aids in relieving sexual
dysfunction. Epimedium herb stimulates the production
of androgens (sex hormones) and has been used successfully
in men suffering from impotence and a low sperm count. Studies
have shown that epimedium raises adrenaline, noradrenaline,
serotonin, and dopamine levels in animals. It is the dopamine
that may be responsible for the herb's use as a reproductive
tonic. The increased dopamine levels in the body set off
a chain reaction that leads to a release of testosterone,
the male sex hormone. Other evidence suggests the herb increases
sensitivity in nerve endings, which may explain why it is
prescribed as an aphrodisiac. Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium
grandiflorum, Epimedium sagittatum) is a plant species popular
in China, Korea, and Japan as an aphrodisiac and sexual
rejuvenator. The first recorded use of the plant dates back
to 200 BC in China. Supposedly, the plant is responsible
for many sexually enhancing effects. Epimedium contains
the flavonoid lcariin that allegedly stimulates sensory
nerves, particularly in the genitals. It has been shown
that Epimedium does increase sexual activity and semen production
in animals. It has an androgenic-like effect on male genitals,
increasing sperm production, copulation activity, and testosterone
levels.(1) Testosterone stimulates centers of the brain
having to do with increased sexual desire in both men and
women. Although there is limited scientific data available
to substantiate the claims of epimedium, studies were conducted
that demonstrated that epimedium sagittatum does improve
sexuality and quality of life in patients undergoing hemodialysis
for renal failure.
Avena
Sativa (Wild Oats)
Avena
Sativa (Wild Oats) is a botanical extract that has traditionally
been used to increase strength, mind, spirit and body.
References to the sexually stimulating effects of oats have
been found up to 200 years ago in the German Pharmacopoeia.
Modern studies at the Institute For Advanced Study of Human
Sexuality have shown that Avena Sativa helps improve
interest in sex. Researchers discovered that Avena
Sativa works by freeing up testosterone, which becomes
increasingly bound to various compounds within the body
with advancing age. Bound testosterone is not nearly as
effective as free testosterone in stimulating the sex centres
in the brain that generate the sex drive that leads us to
seek out and engage in sexual activity. The first reference
to the sexual enhancement properties of wild oats (avena
sativa) can be found in the German Pharmacopoeia of the
late eighteenth centruy. Subsequent research has revealed
that wild oats (avena sativa) free bound testosterone and
oppose the action of sex hormone binding globulin. Significant
positive effects of avena sativa have been measured in both
men and women. About seventy percent of men and women report
increased energy, feelings of well-being and sexual desire
through the use of avena sativa. These results are correlated
with increased serum levels of free testosterone. These
findings support many cultural references in language that
refer to the health benefits of wild oats. Common expressions
such as "feeling his oats" and "sowing his
wild oats" attest to the well known traditionally understood
effects of strength, vigor, and sexuality.of the wild oat
(avena sativa) From 1986 to 1988 the Institute for Advanced
Study of Human Sexuality conducted case studies and clinical
trials on the effect of Avena Sativa extract on men and
women. Trials were done on individuals who had consulted
sexual health care professional help. Subjects were administered
avena sativa extract either daily or episodically. The results
were mixed with about seventy percent of men and women experiencing
significant improvement in sexual desire, response and functional
performance. Amoung the remaining thirty percent, some experienced
moderate improvement while others remained unchanged. Upon
subsequent analyisis it became evident that participants
with significant positive respone, had initial low serum
levels of bound testosterone.
Later the institute conducted a study to determine optimal
doseage levels. The study tested the effects of high and
lower doses of avena sativa extract on men diagnosed as
impotent (erectile dysfunction) by a team of urologists.
Men who did not experience positive response using 300 mg
per day after 30 days were administered 600 mg per day for
30 days. The results showed a marked improvement with the
higher doses for men who had no effect in the original lower
dose study. Men in the study reported no negative side effects
related to the use of avena sativa. Some women reported
some side effects of irritability but with positive sexual
respones. Many men and women in the studies did report significant
increases in energy and sense of well-being beyond the positive
sexual enhancement. Later studies revealed significant
improvements in sexual desire and response for women with
avena sativa extract mixed with saw palmetto.
